The Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center 1 (Phichit), under the Bridge Construction Division of the Department of Highways, is responsible for the construction and repair of reinforced concrete bridges, prestressed concrete bridges, and reinforced concrete culverts. These projects are funded by the government budget and are carried out through the center's own operations. The center serves various highway maintenance divisions in 15 northern provinces under the Department of Highways' responsibility.
Originally, the Department of Highways constructed all bridges internally, divided into different bridge construction categories responsible for bridges across rivers and wide waterways nationwide. Examples include the construction of the Chao Phraya River bridge in Nakhon Sawan Province (Dechatiwong Bridge) and the Ping River bridge in Tak Province (Kittikhachorn Bridge). Later, the government promoted contracting but continued internal construction, establishing two projects in Ubon Ratchathani and Maha Sarakham provinces.
The Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center 1 (Phichit) originated as Project 2, established in 1961 at Ban Tha Rae. The Kaeng Leang Chan Subdistrict, Mueang District, Maha Sarakham Province, at that time was under the Bridge Division, Department of Highways, responsible for the construction of bridges using the self-operated method in Maha Sarakham Province and nearby provinces such as Kalasin and Roi Et, etc.
In 1972, it was considered that the area of Phichit Province was low-lying, with the Yom and Nan Rivers flowing through it, as well as many canals, and most of the existing bridges were wooden bridges. Therefore, it was deemed appropriate to move the office of the Self-Operated Bridge Construction Project No. 2 from Maha Sarakham Province to Km. 0 + 500 on the left side of Highway No. 1062, which is a branch from Highway No. 111 (Phichit – Sak Lek section), along the Nan River, Mueang District, Phichit Province, under the Highway Construction Division. The Department of Highways was responsible for the construction of bridges using its own operations in and around Phichit province, such as Kamphaeng Phet and Phitsanulok.
In 1990, the Department of Highways issued Order No. J.1.9/4/2533 dated December 18, 1990, upgrading the Self-Operated Bridge Construction Project No. 2 to the Self-Operated Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center No. 2, under Construction Office 4, Department of Highways, responsible for self-operated bridge construction in the northern region.
In 1992, the Department of Highways issued Order No. J.1.7/1/2535 dated February 3, 1992, changing its name to Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center No. 1 (Phichit), under Construction Office 4, Department of Highways, while maintaining the same scope of responsibility. Finally, the Department of Highways issued Order No. B.1/93/2538 dated July 21, 1995, transferring Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center No. 1 (Phichit) to the Bridge Construction Bureau. The Department of Highways, up until the present day, since the inception of the project to construct the second bridge in Maha Sarakham Province in 1961, which has now been renamed Bridge Construction and Rehabilitation Center No. 1 (Phichit), has had a total of 15 project engineers or center directors, as follows:
